FRIDAY--The hummingbird eggs hatched today! Two of them. When I went over to my housesitting job to wrap things up, I noticed that the mother (or father--I think both parents egg-sit) was away from the nest, but there were little sounds. There were also flakes of shell on the ground, under the nest. Soon two itsy-bitsy fluffy heads were sticking their beaks in the air, hoping for a meal of gnats or some such delicious fare. I got a ladder, climbed up and had a look-see. Each baby was no larger than a garbanzo bean--and way much cuter than a garbanzo bean.

I waited where I could view the nest without alarming the parents and watched as they fed their young.

The entire nest, both chicks and the mother could fit inside a ping pong ball, cut in half.

Truly incredible.
