Another Day In Cache Valley

By 7pm tonight the storm that had been expected most of the week looks like it is rolling in. The news says snow by morning. We shall see. . .
In any event The Crew is taking off in the morning. Perhaps the storm and The Crew will meet each other in passing. If so, we shall wish the weather peace and prosperity on it's journey.

The Crew made a pit stop at Gossner's Cheese Factory, home of the famous SQUEAKY CHEESE. It's cheese curds, after the whey has been rinsed off and before the curds are pressed into bricks. The curds are VERY mild and squeak when bitten into. We bought a bag of regular and also a bag of garlic flavored. The amazing fact is: this was the first day ever, that Gossner's has ever tried garlic flavored. We give it a THUMBS UP!

The Crew was up and roaming by early morning. This is an old house erected in the 1800's when Wellsville was first settled. Typical of these early houses, it has two small rooms on the first floor--a kitchen and parlor, and two smaller rooms upstairs--two bedrooms. A house of this era would house a family consisting of parents and up to 9-13 (or more) children.

Inside view, through the front window. The rooms are not very wide.
This house belonged to Jude's grandparents--Edith & Wilford Albiston. The original house, when they first bought it, did not have the front porch, and ended just after the 2nd window from the front (right before the small window). It had a kitchen with a coal stove and a stand with a tub for washing dishes, kitchen table (which served as a counter top) and chairs, a rocking chair, and a double cot (which was folded out for 2 boys to sleep in at night. The main room (parlor) had a fold out bed for grandma & grandpa, and a rocking chair. The only bedroom had 2 beds--3 girls slept in one and 3 girls in the other. There was also a very small room that was a food pantry and had a root cellar.
When Jude's mom turned 16, the back part of the house was added on. The new addition became the kitchen (the family also got a fridge at this time), a back porch, a bathroom, and another bedroom (a 9th child--son--had arrived by this time). The original house became a livingroom and 2 bedrooms. The front porch was also added.
Jude remembers visits to grandma's. When she'd wake up, grandma would already be busy in the kitchen. Jude would run to sit beside the coal stove to keep warm.
The lawn was a huge vegetable garden. The family ate fresh food in season and bottled food in winter.
This barn belonged to Jude's ancestors of the Olsen family (grandma's side).
